Years ago I fell in love with the Fast and Furious Franchise. You can imagine my excitement when the two versions of Dominic’s Chargers were released by LEGO. I eagerly waited for an announcement that Brian O’Connor, along with one of his iconic cars, would be released. LEGO 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) is a fan’s dream come true. I was especially touched when this set was announced, and felt that the car chosen was an honorable tribute to Paul Walker as it was taken from the movie that showcased him in the lead role, and featured a car that he personally loved and owned.
The set includes 319 pieces and is designed for ages 9+. Included in the box are 2 bags (marked #1 and #2), a car base, sticker sheet, and instruction book. The set is priced at $24.99, and is a great deal for what is included.
All the other Speed Champions will need to watch out for this race car. It has style and substance. From the spoiler to the racing stripes on the hood, this car is full of bright colors and snazzy design elements. I was excited to discover the use of clear blue 1×2 plates to signify the running lights underneath the vehicle. The spoiler has the ability to be tilted to your chosen style preference, and the hood can be removed to check out the engine. The interior is prepped for winning with 3 tanks of NOS with gauge readings, a fancy dashboard computer, and a gear shift ready for action. The steering wheel and driver’s seat is on the right side of the car as portrayed in the movie.
Overall the set was easy and fun to build. It used a lot of unique ways of connecting pieces together, some of them new to me which I enjoyed discovering. To create the paint job a set of stickers was used. These can be a challenge to get on straight, but a little patience and a steady hand gets the job done. I did notice that the speed gauge sticker disappeared completely behind the steering wheel. It would have been nice to have this stay more visible, but due to the narrow confines of the inside of the car it is understandable, and nice to know it is there nonetheless.
You can’t go wrong by picking up this LEGO set. Whether you are a fan or not, the car itself is well designed and enjoyable to build. If you are a fan then displaying Brian’s Nissan next to Dom’s Charger gives a sense of knowing the beloved characters are right where they belong, together again.
